Points to discuss: 

What are the ways directors can contrast in film?
The director can have scenes that are black and white and mostly dim. And scenes that are bright and colourful.

 What is contrasted in Spike Jonze’s ad?
It is showing the mood when someone is sad, and showing the mood when someone is happy.

 Why did he contrast these things?
To show how someone is when they are around strangers, compared to when they are at home and feel free to do anything they want.

 What else can we call tone in film?
Brightness and contrast

 What are the 3 main elements of tone?
How bright or dim a scene is, the contrast of the subject, and blinding out the shadows.

 How and why does Coppola use tone in the classic film ‘The Godfather’?
He tones the brightness down to where the subject and the surroundings are hard to see when they are in a small room discussing things. Then it is bright and sunny when they are outdoors and having a wedding.
 How can directors control the feelings of the scenes? 
When the scene is dim, it usually makes a sad or series mood. And when it is bright or sunny, it is usually a happy mood.

 What are the 3 ways directors use blocking in film?
Space, shapes and lines

 What are the 3 basic shapes for film blocking?
Circle, square and triangle

 What are the emotions associated with these shapes?
Circles feel safer and inclusive, squares make limited space and triangles are sharp, they also feel aggressive.

 What two things can blocking help with?
Subtext and contrast

What are the purposes of the whip pan and the slow pan?
A whip pan makes goes straight to the point and a slow pan allows the audience to see more of the surrounding.

 What is a purpose of the tilt shot?
A tilt shot is one of the most effective opening shots in the history of film making. A tilt reveals something to the audience as it slowly tilts up or down.

 What does the reverse dolly zoom help show?
The purpes of a reverse dolly zoom shows the character having an intense moment.

 What the difference between a steadicam and dolly shot?
A steadicam is basically the same as a dolly, but since the steadicam is on the camera man itself, the steadicam is able to fin it more tighter spaces.

 What can the hand-held shot help create for the viewer?
It can make the scene more intense as the camera is shaking a lot more.

 What should directors ask themselves with their camera movement?
Is this something that I would want to see, or does this shot make it look more realistic and give the viewers more emotion?

 Camera movement should be doing what?
It should be directing the audiences attention to where the director wants the audience to be looking at.

How does colour in film affect people?
Different colours affects the different moods in people. When you have darker colours in a movie, it creates a gloomy mood. And When you have a movie that is full of colours, it creates a more cheerful and happy mood.
 
 What are the 3 factors in determining colour?
HUE, Saturation and brightness

 Why is the hue in ‘The Matrix’ mostly green?
Because the matrix is based of being in a simulated world on a computer. And the matrix is based on code, code on a computer is green numbers, thats why the matrix is green.

 Why do some films desaturate?
It gives a movie a more raw and old war time look.

 What can brightness and a lack of brightness show in a film?
Having more brightness can help bring happiness and joy to a movie. And having less brightness forms a more of a gloomy vibe in a film.

What is an insert shot?
An insert shot is a shot that focuses on a specific detail within the scene.

 What is the purpose of an insert shot?
It helps the viewer to notice something specific.

 What are the 3 main aspects of the insert shot?
Composition, Colour and Timing.

 What 3 things help the audience feel about the insert shot?
Shot size, shot angle and camera movement.

 Composition of the insert shot helps with what in film?
It helps represent the state of a plot.

 Colour in the insert shot helps with what in film?
It will keep the viewers eye focused on specific points within the shot.

 How long you dwell on the insert shot helps show what?
The timing will impact the viewers interpretation of the shot. If the shot is quick from one scene to another, the viewer wont pay much attention to it. However, if the shot dwells for a longer time, the viewers will pay more attention to the shot.

What is a motif?
A motif is a recurring element that has a symbolic significance in a story.

 Why are they important?
A motif is important as it helps keep the movie to the same theme.

 What makes a great work of art?
Using every opportunity to keep the same look of an object and have it reoccur many times on a movie.

Points to discuss:

The Dutch angle does what?
A dutch angle signals something disorienting and unsettling.

 What is a Dutch angle?
A dutch angle is something that has a noticeable tilt on the camera.

 Who and when created the dutch angle?
The dutch angle was created by the german specialists in the early 1900s.

 What 3 things do directors need to consider for the Dutch angle?
They need to identify, consider and enhance.

 What 4 things can enhance a Dutch angle?
The more you tilt, the more unsettling your shot becomes, a low camera hight will evoke a different feeling than a camera that is at eye level, using a wide angle will generate a different look and feel when compared to a standard or long lens and lastly your depth of field.
