2021 L2 Engineering Hydraulic Power Tools

What are Hydraulic Power tools?

Hydraulic power tools are tools that use hydraulic pressure to lift a jack or to spin a drill.

How do hydraulic power tools work?

Hydraulic machines use a pump to pump hydraulic fluids, compressing it against a tool like a jack, lifting it up, and allowing the jack to hold something up, under the pressure.

What are the different types of hydraulic tools?

Some hydraulic tools require you to manually pump it, whether it's pumping it with your hands or feet. Then there are hydraulic power tools that require you to use a pump to create the pressure. The pump may require you to use gasoline, and some pumps require you to use mains powered electricity.

What is the correct type of PPE gear to wear when operating a hydraulic tool?

Safety glasses are always a must when in the workshop, no matter what your are doing, and you should also wear safety gloves when operating a hydraulic powered tool. You may be required to use more PPE gear depending on what you are operating. Usually, there will be a sign telling you what PPE gear you will need to wear besides the tool.

SAFE USE OF  MAINS POWERED TOOLS AND EXTENSION CORDS

Describe/ Explain what is a mains powered power tool

Using a mains powered tool allows you to work immediately, instead of waiting for a battery to charge for a battery pack tool. However, when using a battery pack tool, you are able to use it more freely around the workshop without having to be near a plug or have to lug a cord around the workshop.

You are most likely to use a mains powered tool in a workshop near an outlet if you don't have a long extension cord. This is because mains powered tools can only work when plugged into an outlet.

Give 3 examples of a mains power tool you may have already used.

An angle grinderA latheA drill press

Describe/explain the task you used it for.

When using an angle grinder, I had to use safety eye protection. I used the angle grinder to grind off the excess weld I had when I was welding my bar. If you have cut your wire, make sure you don't keep using the tool and turn it off at the wall as the wire is live and could shock you or someone who touches it. If there is a fault in the tool, make sure to tell your supervisor and get it replaced if you have a warranty for that tool.

General hazards and dangers of a mains powered power  tool

What is meant by “RCD” An RCD is a cord that is used to help cut the flow of electricity when the power shorts out or if someone gets electrocuted while using a tool that is plugged into the RCD cord.

What is meant by “Double Insulation” Is A cord that has double the amount of rubber protecting the wire. This is important because it helps protect the wire from getting cut or when it is rolled up, it will help protect the wire from overheating as much as a single insulated wire.

Safety checks and safe working practices when using a mains powered tool

Hazards and dangers of extension cords w When using an extension cord, it could get all in the way of other people when being lugged around the workshop and people could trip on it, and it could overheat if it is rounded up into a loop causing a fire.

Safe Use of extension cords When using an extension cord, make sure you line the cord on the ground in lines preventing it from being rolled up and overheating.

General PPE when using mains powered tools

Safety with electricity.

Mains power can be the most dangerous hazard in the workshop as it is deadly and you can't see it, you can only feel it. Battery power can be dangerous as well as it can overheat, expand then blow up. But this is not very likely to happen as batters are quite reliable.

Safty with power tools.

When it comes to power tools, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. For example, if you are not careful when using a drill with high torque, the drill can catch on something when your drilling and break your wrist. Or if you plug in a power tool to mains power while the switch on the tool is on, it could wip around all over the place and hurt you or someone near it. When using a power tool that connects to mains power, make sure that there is no exposed wire sticking out of the insulation as it will shock or kill you if the power is live.

Engineering (Air Compressor)

An air compressor is a reservoir that uses a pump to force air into it compressing the air and allow tools like an air impact wrench, air rachet wrench, air hammer, and air drill to attach to it and work using the force of the compressed air being released into the tools. The air compressor will automatically switch off when it reaches its maximum pressure preventing the air compressor from exploding. The air compressor has a valve on the bottom to allow moisture that builds up from the air being compressed to be released and prevent corrosion. If you are using the air compressor to clean equipment, you need to wear hearing protection and browguard to prevent anything from flying into your face and eyes. If you're using it to plug into tools, you need to wear hearing protection safety glasses to stop anything flying into your eyes. Air compressors aren't particularly tricky to use, once you know how the basics work, it can be very easy. Air compressors aren't only used for putting air into tires, they have lots of uses like using it to connect to air tools around the workshop or to connect to cleaning tools, and so on. I believe that portable petrol injected air compressors are the most useful for a tradie as he can use it anywhere without worrying about mains power or battery power.

Music 2020

When I sat down at the piano in front of the whole class, I was really nervous because I haven't performed that much in front of people before and I was scared to mess up. But I did it anyways because the only way to overcome your fear is just to do it. I only performed half the song as I haven't learnt the whole thing yet. I feel that I did good overall tho. I had a good posture I was slightly more confident and I enjoyed it.

Art Newspaper Painting

My learning outcome for this assessment is to have a clean and even coat of paint making my painting look smooth and keeping the words from seeking through.

For this painting, I decided to use 2 colors, white and red. I mainly used white around the whole painting, and just a hint of red making it pop out more. Having more white around the painting makes it look better and doesn't really overcome the red. But painting white over words is hard as the words usually seep through so I have to put a lot more paint and make it thick. My next step is to clean up the edges of the painting and use a fine brush to paint around the words to make sure I don't paint over it and that it looks clean. and once I'm done and the painting is dry, I will make patterns on it to make it look more pleasing.
